Mission: We are a group of residents in Mill Valley, Corte Madera, and Larkspur working to re-open the historic Alto Tunnel between Mill Valley and Corte Madera for use as a safe, convenient bicycle/pedestrian path for everyone.
The tunnel would provide the general public an option for transit and recreation beneficial to the entire community. The tunnel route would be enjoyable and save time, and it would be conducive to personal health and environmental health.

Imagine a flat, safe, automobile-free route between these towns . . .

No need to drive on Corte Madera Grade or on Highway 101 for quick errands or visits; the tunnel is less than one-half mile long!

No need to negotiate the narrow, hilly, and dangerous route along Corte Madera Grade competing with cars for lane space.

No need to wind along a convoluted patchwork of roads and hilly bike paths along 101 into or from a no-man’s-land of parking lots traffic lights.

The Alto Tunnel is the critical missing link link in the beautiful pathway that runs from Sausalito through Mill Valley and continues in Corte Madera and Larkspur.

Opening the tunnel would provide a safe, easy way to get to stores, schools, and parks!

We believe re-opening the tunnel will provide a better option for EVERYONE: children, the elderly, and those less mobile, as well as bicyclists and pedestrians.

The Alto Tunnel has been identified as a critical element in the County's general plan for bicycle infrastructure. A contiguous, flat, separated bicycle "highway" concept is the goal, and much of it already exists. Re-opening the tunnel is critical to realizing this vision.

Safe Routes Marin meets the first Friday of every month at 14 Vasco Drive in Mill Valley. It's near the Edna Maguire School and very close to the Mill Valley side of the Alto Tunnel. Call 389-8838 for more information. All are welcome to attend meetings.

Directions (Biking or Driving):
From the intersection of East Blithedale and Camino Alto in Mill Valley, turn onto Camino Alto toward Corte Madera. After about 1/4 mile Vasco is a right turn. (It's the second right.)

From the Corte Madera side: go up an over Alto Hill. As you are approaching the last 1/2 mile of the descent into Mill Valley, Vasco is a left turn.
